Vacations, Weather & Life

Anton Chekhov said, “People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy.” Apparently Chekhov didn’t have any vacation plans riding on the weather when he wrote this!

While we all want great weather for our summer holidays, there is truth to what Chekhov wrote. If we seek happiness from things external to us, it will be fleeting. Our happiness will be dependent on whether the sun shines, traffic flows, and countless other factors. It will go up and down more often than the stock market!

That is why faith directs us to a happiness and peace that is grounded in God and rooted within us. When we do this, we are changed—we don’t wait for things to change around us.

I think the change is twofold. It is in part because God gives us an inner peace. But it is also because when we have God-centered lives, we are in a better place to know and focus on what truly makes us happy.

Through it all we trust that “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
