The Power of Guitar Cases and Tattoos

Looking for a date and want to get someone’s digits? Researchers have found that if a man is carrying a guitar case, he’s twice as likely to get someone’s phone number for a date. They also found that a woman with tattoos is twice as likely to get hit on. Oh, the things that researchers delve into!

I find it fascinating to see the clues and cues we use to make judgments about other people. It is hard not to do. But the question we should ask ourselves is this: do we get to know people well enough to see past the exterior clues we use to make judgments? This is especially true for those we categorize negatively. Do we provide an opportunity to learn who they really are?

Jesus is my hero when it comes to giving people a chance.  When people saw a sleazy tax collector, Jesus saw someone we should get to know. When they saw a disreputable prostitute, Jesus invited her to a meal with his friends. When people saw a heathen heretic, Jesus saw a great conversational partner. He gave everyone time and a chance to be known. Shouldn’t we? It’s hard to claim we’re Christian if we don’t!
