From Generation to Generation

‘Generations’ is the topic for this Sunday. “From generation to generation” is a phrase I often hear at the Temple where I play the organ on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s a popular phrase from the Hebrew Bible, and in Hebrew it’s “L’dor vador”. I think of lineage, and of the importance that holds for many people’s identity. I have often heard people say, “I was born an Episcopalian, (or Methodist, or a Presbyterian, or a Jew ....fill in the blanks), but the truth is, we are born as human beings. While it is important to acknowledge our roots, and to be proud of our family heritage, that pride can often lead to a skewed vision of who we really are: human beings whose responsibility it is to our race as humans, to create a more just and compassionate world that will live on from generation to generation.
