Tuesday – What Life Do I Want?
Every so often I come across a turn of phrase that captures my attention, and today a line in 1 Timothy 6 caused me to stop and think. It says “take hold of the life that really is life” (verse 19). I’m thinking back to all the times I was trying to take hold of life, but it was not the life I was looking for. Sometimes it was an entrepreneurial pursuit that was going to change my destiny. Other times it was taking control of my fitness. Still other times it was reducing the pace of life to allow time just “to be” instead of always doing. We all try to take hold of life, and though we have peak moments, many of us find that we never really take hold of the life that really is life. The counsel in 1 Timothy is not the typical emphasis found in self-help books. It says to find the life that really is life, we need “to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share” (6:18). This is when I realized that many attempts to take hold of life revolve around us, and perhaps the life “that really is life” is found when we focus beyond ourselves. There are times we need to be self-centered, but as a way of life, it does not take us where we want to go.
