Friday – You’re (Not) Special
When my daughter was young, I complimented another young girl on how pretty she looked. My daughter looked up at me with sad eyes and said, “Dad, aren’t I pretty?” In the mind of a little girl, there is only so much of dad’s affection to go around, and she wanted to be sure she was the special one. The early church struggled in its relationship to God in the same way. They wanted to know that they were the object of God’s grace and love. To be special, they thought they had to be the sole object of God’s affection. 1 Timothy 2:4 is a reminder that God’s love is larger than this. It says God “wants not only us but everyone saved” (The Message). Every once in a while we need a reminder that for God’s love to be special, it does not have to be restricted. And for us to be special, others do not need to be excluded.
